The Un-Flushables: Newk's Guide

What do a nappy, a goldfish and cotton buds have in common? No this isn't the start of a joke, but some of the things we frequently find in Gympie's clogged toilets. It may seem completely harmless but these items lead to contaminated waterways.

Tissues and paper towels

These products may seem similar to toilet paper but they aren't made to break up as quickly. Some paper towels are actually designed to get stronger in water! Since they remain intact longer, they can absorb more moisture which can cause serious blockages.

Feminine Hygiene Products

Please don't flush any of these down the toilet. We repeat any sanitary item needs to be disposed of in the rubbish not the toilet. These products are designed to expand with water and clog drains easily.

The Dearly Departed Goldfish

Contrary to what you may have seen on TV deceased pets should never be flushed down the loo.

Keep Wipes out of the Pipes

Wet Wipes are the main cause of pipe blockages, and over 500 tonnes are pulled from our sewers every year.

Plastics

Cotton Buds and dental floss contain microplastics which don't break down and lead to pollution of our waterways.

When in doubt, throw it out!
